Transcendentalism in Little Women

Louisa May Alcott was a transcendentalist. Transcendentalism was a religious-philosophical movement in early 19th century America. They believed that God was everywhere and that nature was his greatest manifestation. Transcendentalists were also incredibly anti-racist and believed in the so-called “international family”, the idea that different countries and cultures had the ability to live in peace and learn from one another. This was a very radical idea during a time when xenophobia and racism and slavery were common.
